Gastric Bypass Surgery

Our society appears to worship thinness but it wasn't always like this. In previous centuries, a larger woman was envied and the thin woman was considered sickly. Yet now the opposite is true. Although the majority of women and men too are now overweight, the stigma of obesity remains. We have made some progress as we now have Plus Size models who present themselves as beautiful women but are larger than the stick thin models we normally see. Our obsession with thin bodies has made a generation of women feel worthless and ugly. The diet business is raking in the money even though we know that diets generally don't work in the long run. What is the person to do who is obese, not healthy, and miserable to do? Many people, men and women alike, have decided to stop the diet rollercoaster and take drastic action, gastric bypass. They see this procedure as the only way out of obesity and shame.

The procedure is known as a Gastric bypass and is performed on very obese persons and can give patients the expectation of weight loss. With a gastric bypass, a patient may well lose 50 to 90 percent of unhealthy surplus weight in under a year. Three different types of gastric bypass surgery are used: Laparoscopic, Roux-en-Y and silicone band. For each procedure there are advantages and disadvantages. So, let's take a look to see what each procedure involves:

Laparoscopic Procedure: This gastric bypass surgery procedure involves inserting a tiny camera into the abdomen which enables the surgeon to easily view the inside of the abdomen during the procedure. Like all of the different types of gastric bypass, the stomach will be sewed into a pouch that makes it smaller. This restricts the quantity of food that can be comfortably consumed, which in turn leads to reduced calorie intake and eventual weight reduction.

Roux-en-Y: This is the gastric bypass surgery procedure which involves the top of your stomach being stapled. By stapling the surgeon creates a pouch which is connected to the intestine. The end result of this procedure is the same as it would be for the laparoscopic procedure described above.

Silicone Band Procedure: The silicone band procedure also involves a procedure to make the stomach smaller but rather than using staples, this procedure involves using a silicone band.

The type of gastric bypass surgery a patient receives usually depends on the preferences of their surgeons. Having thoroughly examinied and evaluated your case, your surgeon will decide which form of gastric bypass surgery is the most appropriate for you. You should be prepared for several consultations and tests prior to your surgery.

Gastric bypass will be a costly procedure to have done, but it is sometimes covered by insurance. If you're unsure whether or not your insurance plan will cover gastric bypass you should discus it with your insurance plan administrator. They will be able to tell you whether or not the surgery is covered on your policy. Often, you'll pay part of the costs and your insurance company will pay the rest.

Gastric bypass can be a very effective way for those who are very overweight to shed some of those unhealthy extra pounds. However, like all surgical procedures, there are risks involved. Before proceeding make sure you've discussed gastric bypass at length with your doctor and understand all the pros and cons of the procedure before you commit to having it carried out.
